ADS-B Flight Information Displays for AFIS units

A Flight Information Display can give your Flight Information Service Officers a clearer picture of the traffic around the aerodrome. I obtained the first CAA approval for a FID at an AFIS, and I can help your aerodrome do the same.

How I can help

  • Choosing a FID solution that suits your aerodrome and your budget
  • Installation support, including the receiver and display setup
  • Preparing the safety case and supporting documentation needed to apply for CAA approval
  • Liaison with the CAA on your behalf
  • Training and ongoing support for your staff
  • Virtual Radar Server (VRS) setups with fully customised mapping

Your options

Virtual Radar Server (VRS)

A fully affordable solution, with fully customised mapping for your aerodrome.

Other FID solutions

I can point you to other options, such as the FID offered by Databeacon.

My own ADS-B FID

A bespoke FID with electronic flight progress strips. It is in development and available to offer.

My FID and electronic strips

My own system combines an ADS-B flight information display with a shared electronic strip board. The screenshots show simulated traffic around Manchester Barton (EGCB).

Combined view. Map, traffic and strips together, with QNH from the METAR.
  • Decodes a Mode S / ADS-B feed directly, or reads an existing readsb or tar1090 feed
  • Shared strip board, with multiple controller positions kept in step
  • QNH checked against the METAR, with acknowledgement across positions
  • Works on desktop and iPad, with book-outs and PPR alongside

Screenshots show simulated traffic. Coverage of GA traffic by ADS-B is incomplete, so a FID is a situational awareness aid, and any use at your aerodrome needs agreeing with the CAA.

Questions

Do we need CAA approval for a FID?

If the display is used as an aid in providing the service, the equipment needs CAA approval, and the CAA expects a safety case and supporting documentation. I can help you prepare these and talk to the CAA on your behalf.

Does ADS-B show every aircraft?

No. Only aircraft transmitting ADS-B appear, so many GA aircraft will not be shown. That is why a FID is a situational awareness aid, not a replacement for how you provide the service.

What do we need to get started?

Usually an ADS-B receiver and a display. We would start from what your aerodrome already has and what you want the display to do.

Can I see a demonstration?

Yes. Get in touch and I will arrange a live demonstration.
